This eight-day workshop is an immersion into the world of Ancient
Scotland where we explore intact Neolithic villages, stone circles,
cairns and tombs. The class takes place on the remote and pastoral
Orkney Islands off the coast of northern Scotland. Known as “the Egypt
of the North,” the Orkney Islands in Scotland contain more Neolithic
structures than anywhere else in Europe.
Among the many remarkable places we visit are some of the most
important Neolithic sites in all of Europe, among them Skara Brae, the
Stones of Stenness, Maes Howe, and the Ring of Brodgar. We visit
several islands including Hoy, where the northernmost woodland in
Britain is found, and Rousay, which is considered to house the most
important archaeological mile in Britain.
This workshop focuses on the wisdom of the ancient cultures that
informed the spiritual traditions of the Druids and later Celtic
peoples, including the relationship they had to the world beyond birth
and death as evidenced in the remarkable structures they have left
behind.
