Happy Holidays!
As the nights grow longer and the year draws to a close, I am
appreciative of the many remarkable people I am so fortunate to work
with – staff, students, clients. The Sacred Stream has grown a great
deal over the past eight years. We’ve seen many changes, some good,
some difficult, but all of them propelling us onward. So, thank you for
being a part of the Sacred Stream and making it possible for me to be
here writing this to you.
This month, we have some fun holiday
inspired happenings - the Winter
Solstice Drumming Circle, a free music
download and a sale on gift certificates. After a brief break, we hit
the ground running in January with the Advanced
Depth
Hypnosis workshop, and Introduction
to
the
Shamanic
Journey. We are offering a
brand new class in February (Art and
Sprit) and a very special event in
January (Images of the Isles).
I want to thank those folks who contributed photos to the newsletter,
Deborah Hall, James Kovacs, Suzanne Stanton, and there are few thrown
in from my trip to the desert. Don’t miss our regular features in this
edition of the newsletter Journey on
It, Ask Isa (on
Narcissistic Personality Disorder), and our
article this
month on the Winter Solstice.
Everyone
here at the Sacred Stream wishes you a very joyful holiday season.

It has become a Sacred Stream tradition to offer Laura Chandler's
acclaimed song, Its Christmas, Baby,
for
free
this
time of year. The song was featured on the popular
holiday compilation album, Holiday
at the Beach. It received great reviews and continues to receive
national radio airplay each holiday season. The album features many
popular Smoothjazz artists, including Michael McDonald (Doobie
Brothers), Ottmar Leibert, and Craig Chiquico (Jefferson Starship). (Download the song, free, for a limited

purchasing a music download in our store. Every bit helps and we match
all contributions.

| Event Spotlight: Images of the Isles

Slide show by photographer, Deborah Hall, and a
brief talk on Ancient Scotland and the shamanic tradition of Hawaii, by
Isa Gucciardi, PhD.
Sunday, January 16 at 6:00 pm.
Fundraiser for the Sacred Stream.
By donation. No one turned away for lack of funds.
Join us for a wonderful evening of armchair travel. This event is an
opportunity for people interested in the destination studies classes in
Scotland and Hawaii to get a taste of what is in store, and also for
past participants to reunite. Deborah Hall is a brilliant photographer
and we have been fortunate to have her in our classes and on our trips.
Her generosity in sharing her work can be fully appreciated at this
event when she presents images of the extraordinary Orkney Islands and
Big Island of Hawaii. Both sets of islands were places of great
historical and ancient spiritual significance.

| Class
Spotlight:
Art
and
Spirit |
This new class is part of an evolving series of
workshops in the
Transpersonal
Studies Program. In this class, the essence of art is explored both
topically
and experientially. It focuses on art as an everyday act, not just an
extraordinary act out of the reach of the average person. Contemporary
society
has taken the sacredness of art and turned it into a commodity. By
examining
the way this has shaped your relationship to your self-expression, a
new
relationship emerges.
In
this
class,
we explore the nature of "art" and ways to deepen the
connection to self and the inner processes. Practical aspects of how to
work
with your unique process, creative blocks, and maintaining a practice
will also
be addressed. Students will examine their relationship to art and gain
greater
understanding of how emotion is transferred into form – be it dance,
painting,
music or whatever vehicle you use to express yourself. This class is
experiential and open to professionals and lay persons alike.
This class will be offered on Saturday, February
5 from 1pm to 6pm. Tuition is $145.
Instructor:
Laura
Chandler, CHT. Laura is a writer, musician, and Depth Hypnosis
Practitioner. She
has toured nationally and internationally and her music has appeared in
both
film and television. |

| Winter
Solstice: A Long Winter's Night |
|
By
Laura Chandler
The winter solstice occurs on the day of the year when the earth’s
axial
tilt is farthest from the sun. Simply put, it is the shortest day of
the year. It marks that point in time when the shortening of days stops
and they begin to lengthen until the summer solstice, June 21, when
they shorten again, like the waxing and waning of the moon.
Most
westerners are not aware of this phenomenon of the sun. In fact, we are
rarely attuned to the rhythm of the sky. Instead, we are focused on the
gathering speed brought by the holidays. Caught up in the rush of
holiday shopping, event planning, and travel, we move counter to the
rhythm of the natural world around us, and counter to our own internal
clocks. This can cause stress, anxiety, and restlessness. The event of
winter solstice has long been recognized with celebrations and rituals
throughout the world. There are even structures devoted to the solstice
dating back to the Neolithic Age that suggest ancient people understood
something about this time of year that we have clearly forgotten.

| Journey
On It..." Diving In" |
|
By David Barr
The shamanic journey is a
method of working in an altered state and is achieved by using sound,
such as a
repetitive drum beat. It is called "shamanic" because working
in an altered state in this way is found in most indigenous
cultures.
However, it is not limited to shamanism. The journey can be
described as
an active form of meditation and is very useful in exploring the psyche
and
enhancing personal growth. Our purpose in offering this column is to
create a forum,
where people engaged in a shamanic
journey
practice
may deepen their
work with
the journey, and their understanding of the journey as a tool for
healing.
Please feel free to send us a journey for publication to info@sacredstream.org.
I chose to
ask what was keeping me back in getting my business going. I
was planning on working with an upper world guide, but the drum pulled
me to the lower world. I went down through a pond from my childhood and
into a cave. The spider was waiting for me in the cave and showed me
two images from my childhood. Both revolved around our pool in the back
yard. In the first image, I was sticking my toes into the water and it
was cold, so I was hesitant to go in. In the second image, I dove right
in, made a big splash, and made the most of my time in the pool. Next,
the spider told me to reflect on its nature. I heard the callback, went
up the cave, up to the pond, swam to the surface, and walked out onto
the sand.

ASK ISA: This
Month's Q & A Addresses
"Narcissistic Personality Disorder"
|
|
I listened with great interest to your
teleclass on shamanic healing, power retrieval, and soul retrieval. I'm
wondering whether/how these forms of healing could be applied to
narcissistic personality disorder?
Narcissistic
Personality
Disorder (NPD) is a big subject. There are many subsets of
the disorder, theories about it, and degrees attributed to it. The
DSM-IV describes NPD as “A pervasive pattern of grandiosity (in fantasy
or behavior), need for admiration, and lack of empathy, beginning by
early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts.” Renowned
psychotherapist, Alice Miller, in her acclaimed book, The Drama of the Gifted Child,
describes the disorder as stemming from an interruption in a person’s
narcissistic development, which occurs in childhood. On some level,
everyone is walking around with a degree of narcissistic disruption
that needs healing. Whether it is minor or severe, there are particular
shamanic techniques that could be helpful for someone engaged in trying
to heal the wounding at the root of what may be referred to as NPD.
From a shamanic perspective, all disorders are a reflection of power
loss. Power loss refers to the personal power of an individual and is
indicative of some degree of wounding. When wounding occurs, a person
can develop defenses or other behaviors that result in a recurrence of
the wounding or a draining of the individual’s power.
Generally speaking, people with imbalances that present as NPD-like
symptoms tend to have issues with personal will and an attachment to
events turning out the way they expect. They may react forcefully if
something occurs outside of what they consider acceptable and their
worldview is often very distorted. Usually, people with these patterns
have to be in a fair amount of distress before they will consider
seeking help.
